1. The Refrigerant Shift: Why R290 and R600a Are Replacing R134a and R410A

HFC refrigerants such as R134a (GWP 1,430) and R410A (GWP 2,088) are being phased down under the Kigali Amendment. The EU F-Gas Regulation has banned R404A and R507 in many new equipment categories; China, India, Saudi Arabia, and California are following suit. The replacement gases fall into three buckets: HFOs, low-GWP blends (R32, R454B, R452B), and natural refrigerants — most prominently R290 (propane, GWP 3) and R600a (isobutane, GWP ~3).

R290 and R600a deliver excellent thermodynamic performance, are inexpensive, and dramatically cut the carbon footprint of a refrigerator or air-conditioner over its service life. 2. Why Flame Brazing Is Prohibited on R290 and R600a Production Lines

Traditional copper tube joining uses an oxy-acetylene or air-propane flame to heat the joint and melt filler rod into the gap. Standards bodies have responded accordingly: IEC 60335-2-24 and IEC 60335-2-40 impose charge limits and require that the joining process does not introduce uncontrolled heat near the refrigerant. Most OEMs now write into their EHS rules that no open flame is permitted anywhere on the line after the refrigerant circuit has been charged or evacuated.

Even on lines that braze before charging, the open flame adds factory-floor risk: hot-work permits, fire watch, gas cylinder handling, and fume extraction. The cost of compliance, plus insurance and training overhead, makes flame brazing uneconomical at scale. A flameless joining method that produces a hermetic, metallurgical seal in roughly one second per joint is the obvious answer.

3. How Ultrasonic Tube Sealing Works on Flammable Refrigerant Copper Lines

An ultrasonic tube sealer uses high-frequency mechanical vibration (typically 20–40 kHz) transmitted through a sonotrode into the copper tube end. Under controlled clamping pressure, the relative motion breaks through surface oxides and creates a solid-state metallurgical bond without melting the parent metal. The process is “cold” metallurgically — peak temperatures stay well below copper’s melting point — so there is no flame, no spark, no arc, and no filler metal.
